CDL driver pay in 2026 — the real numbers

CDL driver pay varies more than most job categories — a local dry van driver and an OTR tanker driver with HazMat can have a $40,000+ annual income gap. The key variables are route type, freight category, experience, and endorsements. Here's what the market actually looks like in 2026.

Pay by route type

Route TypeTypical CPM RangeEst. Annual (avg miles)Home Time

Pay by freight type

Freight type adds a premium on top of base route pay. Here's how different freight categories compare to standard dry van in 2026:

What affects CDL driver pay most

  • Endorsements — HazMat and Tanker endorsements add $0.05–$0.15 CPM above base rate. The endorsement cost ($100–$200) pays back within weeks.
  • Experience — the biggest jump in pay happens between 0–2 years and 2–5 years. After 5 years, experience premiums flatten unless you move into specialized freight.
  • Miles consistency — a high CPM rate means nothing if the carrier can't deliver consistent miles. 2,500 miles/week at $0.62 CPM earns more than 2,000 miles/week at $0.68 CPM.
  • Sign-on bonuses — common in 2026, typically $3,000–$10,000 paid in installments. Factor in the vesting schedule before accepting.
  • Benefits value — health insurance, 401K match, and paid time off can add $8,000–$15,000 in annual value on top of base pay.

For employers: are your pay rates competitive?

If your job postings aren't generating applications, pay rate is almost always the first thing to audit. Drivers talk to each other — they know the market rate within $0.02 CPM. A rate that was competitive 18 months ago may be significantly below market today.

Use the benchmarks above to check where your offer sits. Then use the CDL Job Description Generator to write a posting that leads with your rate — the single most important factor in application volume.
