What tanker drivers look for — and what most postings get wrong
Tanker is one of the most specialized CDL segments. The driver pool is smaller, the endorsement filters out most applicants, and experienced tanker drivers know their value. If your posting looks like a dry van posting with "tanker" in the title, you will get dry van applicants — not tanker drivers.
- State the endorsement upfront — Tanker (N) required, or Tanker + HazMat (X) required. Don't bury it in requirements where drivers might miss it.
- Mention endorsement sponsorship — if you'll pay for a candidate to get their tanker or HazMat endorsement, say it. This opens your applicant pool significantly.
- Specify the product — fuel, food-grade, chemicals, cement, and grain all require different experience. "Tanker freight" tells an experienced driver nothing.
- HazMat MVR standards are different — 10-year DUI/DWI lookback for HazMat, not 3–5 years. State your actual standard upfront.
