Oversize posting: what specialized drivers look for
Oversize and heavy haul drivers are among the most experienced and highest-paid CDL operators. They know their value and they have options. The two things they look for first are pay rate and who handles permits. If your drivers are responsible for securing their own permits, that needs to be stated — and compensated.
- Pay reflects the skill premium — oversize rates should be $0.10–$0.20 CPM above standard OTR. If your rate is not competitive, experienced drivers will not apply.
- Permit coordination policy — state clearly whether the company handles permits or the driver does. Company-handled permits are a significant selling point.
- Pilot car policy — who schedules and pays for pilot cars? State it explicitly.
- Experience requirements are real — this is not an entry-level position. Minimum 2 years OTR, oversize or heavy haul preferred. State it upfront.
